Master Bedroom Finished (For Now)

In my nesting frenzy these last couple weeks of pregnancy, we got our master bedroom pretty much done. Knowing myself, change may occur over time (ha) but for now it's come a long way from where we had it upon move-in. The paint color and ceiling fan have both been changed to name few things.

The last time I posted on this room, I still had the nightstands and dresser area to finish up. Done and done!

I'm still on the fence about whether I need a lumbar pillow across the front of these 24"x24" patterned pillows, and whether I need something over the headboard. My gut right now says no and I like how clean and simple it is. Sometimes less is more, but we'll see.

We are loving the sconces beside the bed. In a small bedroom like this one, these has saved so much space for us both visually and physically.

All the fabrics came together. I didn't get a chance to use the diamond embroidered linen and now it's on backorder, but maybe one day.

I finished the nightstands in Annie Sloan paris gray and french linen (my go to chalk paint colors). Our azaleas are in bloom already and it's not even March 1! Crazy.

I also finished this little dresser vignette. The window is from The Citadel where Hubs graduated. It was previously in the guest room/nursery. The painting is by my aunt and depicts our wedding day at The Lace House.

Still rocking my old Craigslist redo dresser. It's still one of my favorite furniture pieces I own! And one of the cheapest!

And so with some paint, a couple new pillows, and some space saving furniture, this room is basically complete!

Master Bedroom: Nesting in Progress

Nesting is in full effect around here! The bug has finally hit me, starting with the master bedroom! While my dad was in town last week, Hubs had some help lifting the headboard to install it, finally! The headboard has been leaning against the wall since we moved to Savannah over a year ago. Feels so much more like a finished space with just the headboard on the wall! I know it sounds crazy, but the past couple nights I've been sleeping a lot better, too just having this room almost finished. The men folk also installed the sconces next to the bed.

The biggest obstacle is obviously the size of the room. We have a king sized bed that we are just not willing to part with ( I need my space! ). Smaller bed side tables were in order, and I found some very reasonably priced ones on Overstock, and then found the same ones for even cheaper on Amazon. (If you don't have Amazon Prime, you aren't living!) They were the wrong color (bright turquoise), but with a little Annie Sloan all is well again. Sometimes I just buy furniture based on its shape and price rather than what it looks like. Paint fixes almost everything.

The other side of the room didn't really change other than the paint color on the wall. It used to be a deep blue/navy, now it's Behr Dolphin Fin.

And the room is almost done! Just waiting on a baby now!

Still to do- we need to hang the leaning mirror on the wall. By moving our bed over with the gained space we got from smaller bedside tables, we lost room for the mirror to actually lean. Once it's mounted onto the wall the problem will be solved.

I also need to finish painting the other bedside table, and the master bathroom painting needs to be finished. Then there's this sad area that also needs to be addressed....

I keep telling myself "a place for everything, and everything in it's place". That is the hardest part of a smaller home. Organization! I've gotten much better at it, but still could use some help. If you have any tips, I'd appreciate them!

Just little things to do before this room is "done". Hooray! Three weeks to go until my due date.... tick tock.

Master Bedroom Paint & Other Plans

Over the weekend, Hubs got to painting the bedroom (that is before he caught our daughter's cold, boo). I was debating last week over keeping the darker blue or changing it up.

Well, in true Ashley fashion, change it up was the route we went. I'm glad we did. The blue was pretty but it didn't feel like us, felt too much like previous owners. Not a bad thing, but sometimes you just want something new.

The color I picked is Behr Dolphin Fin. Can I just say, new favorite gray. No blue, no purple, not too brown, not too white, perfect. You've got to try it out if you're searching for a truly neutral no fail gray! Coincidentally it's also the color we are using in our kitchen... that's for a later post.

Behr Dolphin Fin

The other side of the room is sort of our blank slate. We need to hang the headboard and get some new side tables that fit this bedroom better. We went from a good sized master in Atlanta to this cozy box, haha. Which means we had to rethink a lot of our furniture, but the king bed had to STAY and so did the linen nailhead headboard I made.

My plan is for smaller bedside tables that are round. Nothing wider than 18" and needs to be 29" high. When you use a small bedside table, it's usually a good idea to rethink the lamp situation. By mounting sconces on either side of our headboard, it will free up much needed space on the end tables without sacrificing lighting. I'd also like to use much of the same stuff we have since it's all pretty new, and well, we do have a baby on the way we need to save for!

So, here's the overall plan for the room.

I found both the sconces and the bedside tables on Overstock. It's always a good day when you find a steal. The only other thing I need to do is make a large lumbar out of the linen embroidered diamond fabric. Still debating pulling in a few other fabrics.... To be continued!

Master Bedroom Plans

Well, this week has started with a bang. Evans has a cold and so do I (cannot shake this mess). She didn't nap yesterday, so last night needless to say she was a hot mess. In complete meltdown mode hysteria. Parents know what I'm talking about. She couldn't be consoled or reasoned, so straight to bed at 6:00 she went, and she was OUT. Oh my.

I had planned on going to bed early since the last couple of nights I had maybe 5 hours of sleep. I was exhausted (and am today, but hey that's a mom for you! HA). I went to our room to get ready for bed, and heard Niagara Falls coming from our shower. What. The. Of course, Hubs was still en route on his way back from the national championship in AZ, and it was just me. I couldn't get the water to turn off to save my life! So I decided the only thing I could do was turn the main supply off to the entire house. Ugh. So there I was, 10 pm, freezing cold weather, pregnant as crap, hands and knees in the mud with my wrench reaching into the supply line. I'm terrified of snakes and spiders so I'm glad I just survived the whole ordeal. First world problems, I know. The plumber is fixing the mess today. We hope.

Then of course I had an emotional hormone filled break down (yay pregnancy!). Which kicked up the master bedroom plans in high gear. For the past several months I've been staring at paint swatches on the wall and a completely unfinished chaotic bedroom. I need a place of relaxation, not this. So, the bedroom got bumped to my top priority. Mama wants her sanctuary stat.

Initially, I thought about painting the bedroom lighter, but the blue-navy is growing on me. Plus, that's less work for Hubs, and I don't see him getting the time to paint this room before baby comes in February. What do you think? Keep the blue or go with Behr Dolphin Fin?

Dolphin Fin:

Mercer Blue:

It flows well with our existing bathroom tile and furniture.

So, next up was to decide what fabrics to bring in to tie it all together. This is what we are already working with- white bedding, striped bedskirt, and a gray and blue rug from PB.

I pulled these fabrics in for a bit more softening and interest in the room.

I think the embroidered linen will look great as drapes with our existing roman shades that are in silk taupe.

The ikat spa pattern I think I'll do as large toss pillows on the bed. There's not too much to do in here really, I just needed to get together a plan.

The plan:

(4) 96" embroidered linen curtains
(2) 22x22 or 24x24 ikat pillows
touch up paint (Mercer Blue) or repaint Behr Dolphin Fin?
hang upholstered headboard
find round night stands that fit (this is a tiny bedroom!)
find (2) wall sconces and install

We'll see how much I can get done before baby is sharing this room with us! TBD...

Discount Garden Stool

I love Homegoods. Especially when I come out with exactly what I wanted and I have money left over. I've been on the hunt for a little side table for the reading area in our bedroom, and ta da found one! Oh, and it was $50. Ta da!

This little area is complete. Here's the mirror I purchased initially to hang over our bed when it was positioned in front of the windows. It's staying regardless!

I had fallen in love with Robert Allen Silly String fabric, but could not afford it. I found these drapes on o.co... and I could almost promise you this is the same exact fabric. You can find them here.

Happy Wednesday! We're almost there.... come on weekend (and SPRING for that matter).

Finished Headboard

Saturday afternoon, I decided it was time to put on my big girl pants and get to finishing this mega headboard. If you've been reading along, you know I've been at this thing (or leaving it laying dormant) since last summer. That's almost a full year. How sad am I?! It was overwhelming choosing fabric and finding something that I knew I could live with for a long time. But I finally found fabric... so I didn't have any other excuses.

I ordered extra fabric in case I wanted to use it for throw pillows or something else around the else. It's Robert Allen Linen in Natural and I love it. It's a very good weight for linen, I would definitely recommend it.

Yes, Mom, I did iron it first...

I got down with my electric carving knife and wrapped that sucker in fabric. This was the chaotic scene.. it's gotta get ugly before it gets pretty, right?

And after what felt like 3 years of nailing these boogers in, finally the nail heads are complete.

This was not easy. I got really frustrated. I wanted to cry. I wanted to give up. I wanted to chalk it up to another Pinterest DIY FAIL.

I didn't.

Once it was complete, hubby got to work hanging these brackets. Good job, Hubs.

And here she is, in the room. It's like she is talking to me "see Ash, I was so worth it". She's not perfect, but she was way cheaper than any number I could afford. And I love her. I'll be honest with you, this was not an easy-peasy project in my opinion. This will be my first and last headboard project. Ha! (Sorry, Mom, I didn't iron my bed skirt....love you, mean it.)

But, in the end it was well worth it. It just adds so much to my bedroom, I couldn't be happier.

A closeup of the nail head detail. Those things will haunt my nightmares for a while. I used 3.5 inches of foam to make this headboard super plush.

I really love the fabric!

I told my husband the headboard was going to be big and tall. When we got it on the wall, he said "woah, you weren't kidding". I wasn't kidding. I wanted something huge and not puny. This is a long and horizontal space, and the large stripes I painted makes it feel even longer... so I knew I needed something big and bulky. Something that had presence. Something that demanded my attention.

And so, here she is. Size 77"x42".

Seeing this view at night makes me very happy! I'm glad I powered through it and finished.

I only wish it weren't Monday and I could go back to bed.....
